
Upstate Falls in Regular Season Finale at NJIT

Newark, N.J. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team closed out its regular season schedule Saturday morning with a 5-2 loss against the NJIT Highlanders from the Naimoli Family Athletic and Recreational Facility.
Upstate falls to 7-13 on the season and 3-3 in conference play, while NJIT improves to 10-8 overall and 1-5 in the A-Sun.
The Highlanders went ahead of the Spartans 1-0 following doubles action with wins at the number one and two matches. NJIT was also leading in the number three contest when it secured the doubles point and the match was halted.
Ramon Simonetti and Jamie Yates got Upstate on the board after their victories at number one and three singles. In the number one singles match, Simonetti cut the Spartans deficit down to 2-1 as he defeated Markus Schultz in straight sets 7-5, 6-4. Yates would tie the match after holding off Andres Alban in three sets at the number three spot by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. The Highlanders captured the final three singles contests to take the match 5-2.
Lukas Zvikas won the match for NJIT at number five singles with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Upstate will host the 2016 A-Sun Tennis Championships next week from the USC Upstate Tennis Complex. The tournament begins Friday, April 22. Admission to the tournament will be free of charge.
