Braselton, Ga. – Ryan Cornfield shot a 73 in the final round of the A-Sun Men's Golf Championships on the par-72, 7,032-yard Legends Course at Chateau Elan Tuesday and finished tied for fourth on the leaderboard to lead the USC Upstate men's golf team in the tournament.
Cornfield finished the tournament with rounds of 71, 73 and 73 to finish at 1-over 217 to lead the Upstate cause. He had one birdie on his round today and concluded tournament play first among all players with 45 pars. Cornfield posts the best finish of his career at the A-Sun Men's Golf Championships and compiled the second-best performance by a Spartan golfer since Josh Gallman placed third at the 2010 tournament. For Cornfield, it is his third straight top-10 finish and third of fifth or better in his final five events of the season.
For his performance, Cornfield was named to the A-Sun All-Tournament Team. The senior also tied for fifth among all players in par-4 scoring at 2-over and a scoring average of 4.07, while adding a 2-under mark and 4.83 score average on par-5 holes.
"Ryan just continued his pace of being a steady and strong player today," said head coach Todd Lawton. "He finished the regular season and championship as one of the best performers in the conference, and certainly the best for us. I am excited about his opportunities going forward, both in the near future with the NCAA Regionals and then as he embarks in his future golf career."
Upstate tallied a third round 299 on Tuesday and finished sixth in the team standings at 894 (310-294-299).
The Spartans also counted scores 74, 75, 77 and 80 to shoot 299 on Tuesday. Trey Taylor carded the lowest round of the day for Upstate with a 74, while Sebastian Lopez Bulla added a 75 and Taylor White a 77. Tom Schofield rounded out the afternoon with an 80.
Lopez Bulla finished with a 222 total and in a tie for 17th place to give the Spartans two players in the top 20 for the tournament. White ended play tied for 22nd at 226 and Taylor was 25th with a 229. Schofield placed 34th following his total score of 245.
Taylor was one of the top players for the week in several categories including par-5 scoring, eagles and birdies. The junior tied with Cornfield in par-5 scoring, was second with one eagle and tied for fifth after recording ten birdies. Lopez Bulla also finished with eight birdies.
"We left a lot out there in terms of converting birdie opportunities and making sure when we missed that tee shot getting back to a place where we could get a par or bogey," added Lawton. "That is where we missed this week. It was a tough golf course and a strong place to play."
Kennesaw State won the 2016 A-Sun Men's Golf Championships by seven strokes over second place Jacksonville after shooting a combined score of 864 for the tournament. Jacksonville's David Wicks captured individual medalist honors after winning by one stroke over FGCU's Austin Schultz with a 4-under 212.
Entering the tournament ranked No. 107 among all golfers in NCAA Division I, Cornfield looks to play himself into position to earn a second consecutive individual berth to the NCAA Regionals. The 2016 NCAA Men's Golf Selection Show will be on Thursday, May 5 at 9:30 a.m. announced live on the Golf Channel's Morning Drive show.
