Franklin, Tenn. – USC Upstate senior Ryan Cornfield finished with a 1-over 73 and is tied for 32nd place after opening round action of the NCAA Franklin Regional on Monday held at the par-72, 7,190-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course.
Cornfield is tied with ten other players for 32nd place with two rounds to play. However, a tight field has him just three strokes outside of the top 10.
"Ryan would be the first to admit he wasn't sharp with his shot-making today," said head coach Todd Lawton. "He fought through a lot of missed fairways that put him in deep rough. He wasn't far off, but even a few feet away takes away your birdie opportunities."
The senior began Monday's round with a par on the first hole before carding a bogey on the second. Cornfield finished the front nine with an even-par 36 but started the second-half of his round with a bogey on the par-4 10th hole. A birdie two holes later would bring him back to an even-par score before running into trouble with consecutive bogeys on 13 and 14. Cornfield closed out his round on a positive note with a birdie on the 18th hole.
"He is so strong mentally and I feel good about what he is preparing himself for over the next two days," Lawton added. "He learns every day and that is important."
Texas leads the team standings following a 20-under 268 on Monday. East Carolina is in second place with a 279.
Doug Ghim of Texas leads teammate Taylor Funk and Washington's Carl Yuan following an 8-under 64. Patrick Cover of UNC Wilmington is the top individual in fifth place thanks to a score of 67.
Cornfield will tee off his second round at 10:01 a.m. Tuesday morning on the 10th hole.
