Franklin, Tenn. – Ryan Cornfield closed out play at the NCAA Franklin Regional by shooting the lowest score of the day with a third round 65 to finish tied for ninth place on Wednesday at the par-72, 7,190-yard Vanderbilt Legends Club North Course.
Cornfield's round of 65 is the second-lowest on the team this season and fell one stroke shy of tying his school record of 64 set earlier this year at the Furman Intercollegiate. He moved up 20 positions in the individual standings to finish in the top-10, his sixth of the season, and was second among individuals competing behind James Madison's Ryan Cole. Cole concluded the tournament in a tie for second.
The senior equaled Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong for the lowest round of any A-Sun golfer this week at the NCAA Regionals. Cornfield wrapped up his Upstate career with an 8-under score of 208.
"What a great way to end a career," stated head coach Todd Lawton. "As much as some people may be surprised by such a low closing round, I am not. Ryan is, and always will be, one of the best collegiate players I have coached."
After carding a bogey to start the round, Cornfield responded by recording six birdies during a seven-hole stretch between holes 7-13. He then posted a pair of par's on the 5th and 6th to remain at 5-under for the day. Cornfield closed strong with two more birdies on 16 and 18 to card the 7-under round of 65. He went 5-under 31 on the back-nine highlighted by the five birdies.
"I am excited for the next steps on his golf journey and no doubt will miss him in our program," Lawton said. "I have been honored to coach such a fine young man."
Texas captured the team championship at the Franklin Regional with a score of 819, while Houston's Michael Perras took home individual medalist honors at 16-under 200.
