Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's soccer team will begin the Tyson John era on Friday night as the Spartans open the 2016 season at ETSU from Summers-Taylor Stadium at 7 p.m.
John is the fourth coach in Upstate women's soccer history and arrives in Spartanburg after spending the past five seasons at NAIA member Martin Methodist. Under John's direction, the Redhawks posted a 74-23-4 record and made the NAIA Tournament in each of the five seasons.
Upstate returns 13 letterwinners from 2015, including senior Rachel Baylor and sophomore Kate Winegarner. Baylor and Winegarner tied for the team-lead with four goals, while Winegarner led the Spartans with 11 points. The returning players will be joined by nine newcomers.
Friday's matchup is the ninth all-time meeting with ETSU holding an 8-0 advantage. The Bucs won last year's meeting 2-0 at Upstate.

Upstate opens the home portion of its schedule on Tuesday, welcoming Winthrop to County University Stadium for a 7 p.m. match.
