Spartans Advance to Four Championship Matches at USC Upstate Fall Classic

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team saw four players advance to the championship match of their respective draws on Saturday as the Spartans completed play on day two of the USC Upstate Fall Classic.
Felix Ewers and Ankush Arora are playing in the championship match as part of singles play; while Ewers and Matt Bennion, and Arora and Fernando Bernardes will compete in doubles championship matches.
Ewers advanced to the championship round of the Black Singles draw after winning twice on Saturday over UNC Asheville's Josh Swindler and Diego Manzanas of Presbyterian College. The junior began the day by defeating Swindler 6-3, 6-1 and followed with a 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Manzanas. Ewers will take on Jan Porteset of Armstrong Atlantic at 11:15 a.m. Sunday morning.
Arora went unbeaten in two matches as he competes in the Green Singles Consolation bracket. Arora picked up back-to-back straight set wins over Jacob Wall of Gardner-Webb and Ben Kelley of Presbyterian College. The sophomore won 6-0, 6-2 over Wall and 6-4, 6-4 versus Kelley. Arora will also play at 11:15 a.m. on Sunday against Jaime Castillo Lopez of Presbyterian College.
Upstate opened the day with two doubles combinations moving on to Sunday's final round.
In the Black Doubles Consolation draw, Ewers and Bennion topped Edward Colclough and Majed Yousif of UNC Asheville 8-2. The duo is scheduled to take on Liberty's David Bush and Diego Castano on Sunday morning at 10 a.m.
Arora and Bernardes held off Alex Poynter and Max Borcuti of Liberty 8-5 in its lone doubles match of the day in the Green Doubles Consolation bracket. The team will now play Liberty's Chase Burton and Vince Salas at 10 a.m. on Sunday.
