LakePoint, Ga. – The USC Upstate cross country teams swept the ASUN Runner of the Week awards as senior Alex Love was named the men's runner of the week and junior Leah Jostes the women's runner of the week, league officials announced on Wednesday. Both runners claim the award for the first time.
Love earned his first career top-five with a career-best third place finish at the Winthrop Invitational last Saturday. Love completed the 8k course in season-best 26:53.50 as the Spartans claimed five of the top 10 positions. Upstate and Winthrop tied with 30 points, but the Spartans earned the team victory thanks to having a higher finishing sixth runner.
"Alex had a great race moving up in the last mile," head coach Carson Blackwelder said. "It was a season best for Alex and the first time he has been our number one runner on the team."
Jostes was the top finishing Spartan at the Winthrop Invitational as she finished in 25th place with a 5k time of 20:41.30. Jostes has been the top runner for Upstate in both meets this season.
"Leah had a good race on Saturday, running strong in the second half of the race," Blackwelder said. "I'm excited to see what she can do in the upcoming meets."
Upstate will take this weekend off before returning to action on Saturday, Oct. 1 at the Upstate Invitational. The meet is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
