Greenville, N.C. – Sidney Dermody fired a career-low round on Monday to lead the USC Upstate women's golf team following day one action at the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate from the par 72, 6012-yard Greenville Country Club.
Dermody finished first day action as one of three players in a tie for 17th place after shooting a combined score of 151 (72-79). The 72 carded by the junior is a new career-low round, surpassing her old mark of 73 turned in during the final round of last year's ASUN Championships.
"I am very proud of Sidney," said head coach Todd Lawton. "She persevered through a rough start in the second round and posted a great day for us."
Upstate currently sits in a three-way tie for 13th place with Winthrop and Presbyterian College following a first day 626 (303-323). On a day in which the Spartans had three players, consisting of two freshmen and one sophomore, walk 36 holes for the first time in their career, the squad compiled the lowest round in two seasons. The 303 first round score, which had Upstate tied for second place, is also the lowest for the team since compiling an opening round 298 at the 2014 Great Smokies Intercollegiate.
"I am very proud that we are growing as a team in terms of potential," Lawton added.
The Spartans also counted scores on Monday from Pan Paksanont, Payton Culler, Anna Chanthaphaeng and Caroline Heustess. Paksanont, Culler and Chanthaphaeng are all within four strokes of each other on the leaderboard. Pakasanont is tied for 44th at 156 (77-79), Culler sits tied for 57th place with a 159 (75-84) and Chanthaphaeng is tied for 66th at 160 (79-81). Heustess, playing in her first collegiate event, rounds out the standings for Upstate in a tie for 86th position with a 166 (82-84).
Host school East Carolina holds an 11-stroke advantage in the team standings over Cincinnati at 595. On the individual leaderboard, Morehead State's Anna Magnusson leads by two strokes over Danielle Fuss of High Point and Charleston Southern's Shelby Thompson at 2-under 142.
The final day of the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate will tee off Tuesday morning at 8:30 a.m.
