
Six High School Races Conclude 33rd Eye Opener Invitational on Saturday

Spartanburg, S.C. – The 33rd edition of the Eye Opener Invitational came to a close Saturday morning as six high school races took place at Milliken Research Center in Spartanburg.
The event began at 8 a.m. Saturday morning with the International Girls Race followed by the International Boys at 8:30 a.m., Championship Girls at 9 a.m., Championship Boys at 9:30 a.m., Junior Varsity Girls at 10 a.m. and concluded with the Junior Varsity Boys at 10:30 a.m.
The team and individual race winners are as follows:
International Girls Team: Riverside
International Girls Individual: Jessie Crowley, Riverside
International Boys Team: Riverside
International Boys Individual: John Ward, Wade Hampton
Championship Girls Team: Palmetto
Championship Girls Individual: Molly Suttle, Spartanburg Christian Academy
Championship Boys Team: Charlotte Catholic
Championship Boys Individual: Joey Teachout, Rock Hill
Junior Varsity Girls Individual: Amanda Littrell, Riverside
Junior Varsity Boys Individual: Jeb Jones, Science Hill
The USC Upstate cross country teams used Saturday as a day to give back to the Spartanburg area by volunteering as part of the program's commitment to community service. Helping in the running of the meet is just one of numerous community service projects organized by the Spartan cross country program each year. Annually, the Eye Opener Invitational is one of the largest cross country meets in the Southeast region.
Upstate had seven runners finish with new personal bests during the college portion of the race on Friday evening. Theodore Kountourogiannis scored his third career top-10 finish as the men's team scored a third place finish. The Upstate women finished in fifth place.
A total of 12 teams, including the Spartans, competed in the Eye Opener college races on Friday. The other 11 teams were Anderson, Brevard, Clemson, Converse (women only) Erskine, King, Limestone, Lincoln Memorial, Stetson and Wofford.
