
Spartans, Mountaineers Battle in Non-Conference Match on Saturday

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team plays its final non-conference match of the season on Saturday when the Spartans head to Boone, N.C. for a 2 p.m. match against the Appalachian State Mountaineers at Boone Courts.
Upstate (5-12) is playing its first non-conference match since March 17 and recently dropped a 4-3 decision at home to Florida Gulf Coast on Wednesday. The Spartans captured the doubles point over Florida Gulf Coast with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, and also won two singles matches. Ignacio Garrido, playing at the No. 5 position, extended his singles winning streak to six straight matches after a 6-2, 7-5 victory in straight sets. In the No. 6 singles match, Francisco Neto held on for a three-set victory 6-4, 4-6, 6-1.
Garrido leads Upstate this season in singles competition with an 11-5 record playing primarily at No. 6 singles. Garrido and Fernando Bernardes have eight wins in doubles play highlighted by four coming at No. 2 doubles.
Appalachian State currently sits at 9-6 on the season after defeating Oral Roberts 4-1 on March 15. The Mountaineers host UNC Greensboro on Friday afternoon prior to playing the Spartans on Saturday. Appalachian State is led in singles play by Scott Webster with an 11-3 record playing at No. 1 singles. Two doubles combinations are 6-1 on the season in Webster/Milo Bargeron and Jack Maddocks/Trey Morris.
Upstate continues its three-match road trip on Thursday, April 6 as it steps back into conference play against North Florida at 6 p.m.
