
Upstate Falls to Marshall 3-0 in Final Match of Rocky Top Invitational

Knoxville, Tenn. – The USC Upstate volleyball team closed out play at the Rocky Top Invitational on Saturday afternoon with a 3-0 loss to the Marshall Thundering Herd from Tennessee's Thompson-Boling Arena.
Upstate falls to 3-10 overall while Marshall improves to 5-10 on the season.
The Thundering Herd won the match by scores of 25-18, 26-24 and 25-16.
STATS OF THE MATCH
- Marshall held a .308 to .153 advantage over the Spartans in hitting percentage.
- Lily Dempsey paced the Upstate offense with seven kills and added five digs.
- Madison Haake dished out 24 assists and recorded five kills on no attack errors for a .714 hitting percentage.
- Kaleigh Kelley finished with a match-high 14 digs.
- Jac'cara Walker led all players with 16 kills for Marshall while Madison Hill contributed 13.
- Madelyn Cole recorded 35 assists and Kayla Simmons 13 digs.
SET-BY-SET BREAKDOWN
- Set One: The teams exchanged the opening 12 points of the first set and the score sat tied at 6-6 on a Thundering Herd attack error. Marshall then used a 13-5 run to go ahead 19-11 on an attack error. The Spartans attempted a late rally and cut their deficit to 24-18 after a kill by Haake. The Thundering Herd won the set the following play.
- Set Two: The second set featured ten ties and two lead changes. Haake gave Upstate an early 7-6 lead with her kill and Montana Swanson kept it a one-point advantage, 9-8, following her kill a couple of plays later. The kill from Swanson sparked four straight points for the Spartans as they led 12-8 midway. Upstate stayed ahead at 14-10 on a Marshall attack error. The Thundering Herd came back to tie the score at 15-15 until the Spartans responded with a 7-4 run to lead 22-19 capped by a Dempsey kill. Marshall finished the set on a 7-2 run to win 26-24.
- Set Three: The Thundering Herd began the third set scoring five of the first seven points to lead 5-2. Upstate trimmed the lead to 7-5 shortly after on Haake's kill. Marshall broke the set open courtesy of an 11-5 run to put the score at 18-10. The Spartans got as close as eight points three times after that with the last coming at 24-16 on a kill from Haake. The Thundering Herd captured the set, and match, the next play on a kill.
