
Hutto, Paksanont Pace USC Upstate on First Day of Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic

Kiawah Island, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's golf team battled strong winds and rain to shoot its lowest round ever at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic on Sunday to sit in a tie for 17th place from the par 72, 5964-yard Osprey Point Golf Club.
The Spartans carded a first round 301 and are tied for 17th place in a field that consists of 43 teams. USC Upstate is tied in the team standings with Georgia Southern and Stephen F. Austin.
College of Charleston leads the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic after day one by one stroke over William & Mary at even-par 288. Individually, there is a four-way tie for first place at 3-under between Valentina Giraldo of Jacksonville State, Alexandra Batista of Stephen F. Austin, Teresa Conroy of North Florida and Allison Olberding of William & Mary.
A LOOK AT THE SCORECARD
- The tie for 17th place standing after round one is the best by the Spartans all-time at the Edwin Watts/Kiawah Island Spring Classic by more than 10 places.
- The first round 301 is also a tournament-low for USC Upstate in the eight years it has played at the event.
- The Spartans are ahead of 12 teams in the overall standings that are ranked higher in the Golfstat rankings.
- USC Upstate currently sits just five strokes outside the top-10.
- The Spartans carded a 3.45 stroke average in par 3 scoring, 4.22 stroke average in par 4 scoring and 5.20 stroke average in par 5 scoring.
- USC Upstate also collected 52 pars and 10 birdies.
- Four Spartans finished the final six holes of their first round at even-par or better.
- Brooke Hutto and Pan Paksanont lead USC Upstate individually as both are tied for 41st place out of a field that consists of over 220 golfers. Both players had opening round scores of 74 and recorded three birdies each.
- Hutto tied her career-low round of 74 on Sunday.
- Sidney Dermody is two strokes back of Hutto and Paksanont in a tie for 83rd place with a 76.
- Anna Chanthaphaeng (T-104th, 77) and Payton Culler (T-183rd, 83) round out the individual standings.
- Dermody leads the Spartans in par 3 scoring at even-par with a 3.00 stroke average and 13 pars.
- Paksanont tallied a team-best one-over par score and 4.10 stroke average in par 4 scoring.
- Hutto is first on the team in par 5 scoring at 1-under with a 4.75 stroke average.
- Paksanont and Chanthaphaeng are both at even-par (5.00 stroke average) on par 5 holes.
