
USC Upstate remains Undefeated at Home against Bob Jones

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate led wire-to-wire in a 71-49 win over Bob Jones on Thursday night at the Eddie and Ann Payne Arena inside the G.B. Hodge Center.

USC Upstate (5-4) opened the game up on a 19-7 run and never looked back against Bob Jones (5-7). The Spartans shot 46 percent from the field and ended the quarter with a 19-13 advantage over Bob Jones. Sophomore forward Michaela Gibbons (Troutman, N.C.) led the team in scoring with six points in the opening frame.

After a quick second quarter in which the Spartans added 17 points against Bob Jones, USC Upstate led 36-27 going into the halftime break. Gibbons led all scorers with 12 points in the opening half of play. Kylee Leffew led Bob Jones with seven first half points.

In the third period the Spartans began to distance themselves even further from Bob Jones as they opened the quarter on a 16-2 run. With 3:36 remaining in the quarter, Natalia Panufnik (Poland) drained a three pointer from the top of the key to give the Spartans a 23-point advantage, USC Upstate's largest lead of the night.

In the final frame of the night USC Upstate outscored Bob Jones 15-13 to take home their fifth home win of the season. Brianna Lewis (Chicago, Ill.) scored six of the team's final 15 points in the game. Â

Upstate- For the second time this season Brianna Lewis recorded a double-double, tonight the senior guard registered 12 points and 10 assists in a winning effort. Michaela Gibbons led all scorers with 17 points on the night and Quadijah Moore (Greenwood, S.C.) rounded out the double-figure scorers with 10 points in the contest. Riley Popplwell (Union Mills, Ind.) scored her 800th career point and led the team in rebounds with 10 boards on the night.

Bob Jones – Kylee Leffew led the team in scoring with 11 points on the night and Shea Dickinson added 10 points in the loss. Rachel Clark recorded a team high nine rebounds.

UP next for the Spartans
USC Upstate will be back at home on Saturday, December 28 against Charleston Southern in their Big South Conference opener. The game is scheduled for a 2 p.m. tip-off against the Buccaneers.
