Spartanburg, S.C. – USC Upstate head tennis coach Tim McLane has announced the addition of Leon Roider to the men's program and will join the Spartans for the 2020 season.
Roider is a native of Vienna, Austria and attended high school at AHS Wien-West. He also played on the club circuit for TC Kalksburg.
"We're very excited for Leon to be joining our program," said McLane. "He's a hard worker with a good, aggressive baseline game and he's got a lot of upside for his game to develop during his time here."
Roider has played primarily on the international and club circuit ranking as high as No. 1,370 in the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior rankings. He currently boasts a current Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) of 11.83 but has been as high as 12.54 in the spring of 2018. Roider has qualified and reached either the round of 16 or round of 32 in singles play four times at the Grade 2, Grade 4 and Grade 5 levels. He advanced to the Round of 32 singles Grade 4 twice in August of 2017 in Marbor and Zilina. In July and September of 2018, Roider moved on to the Round of 16 Grade 2 in Prague and Round of 32 Grade 4 in Veska. In doubles play, he has reached the quarterfinals of the Grade 5 level in Tirana.
"He's going to bring a good work ethic and competitiveness, which is going to help push our returners and give us some pop in the lineup," McLane added. "I feel like he's going to fit in well with the rest of the team."
He is the son of Oliver and Susanna Roider.
