TEMPE, Ariz. – The USC Upstate men's tennis team has received All-Academic Team honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), it was announced on Thursday afternoon.
Seven men's tennis student-athletes were recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes including Ankush Arora, Fernando Bernardes, Francisco Neto, Luka Eble, Lucas Percy, Tom Russwurm and Samuel Schiano.
USC Upstate posted a combined grade-point average of 3.783 during the 2018-19 academic year.
"I am very proud of the effort our guys put forth in the classroom this year," said head coach Tim McLane. "We didn't have the year we wanted but this group always took care of their business on and off the court, and they stayed self-motivated throughout the year. This recognition from the ITA is further proof of that."
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade-point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners were factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2018 and spring 2019).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade-point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least two semesters (including freshman through senior year).
The Spartans were one of five Big South programs to earn the distinction along with Gardner-Webb, Radford, UNC Asheville and Winthrop.
