The USC Upstate Cross Country teams Shake-Off the Cobwebs at the Covered Bridge Open

BOONE, N.C. – The USC Upstate cross country teams shook off the cobwebs on Friday night at the Covered Bridge Open, the men's team finished in seventh place, while the women's team eighth overall.
"Mia Davis and Laura Yarbourough had good races," USC Upstate head cross country coach Carson Blackwelder said. "They ran at personal record efforts. On the men's side, Jonathan Johnson and Michael Tardella led the team. Johnson had his second fastest time ever. We saw some Big South competition and we know what we need to do to rise to their level."
Jonathan Johnson (New Bern, N.C.) led the men's team with a 26th place finish in the event. The sophomore runner completed the eight-kilometer course in a time of 26:40.08. Rounding out the Spartans top-three were Jacob Coccia (Rock Hill, S.C.) with a 37th place finish (27:26.36) and a 41st place finish by Michael Tardella (Cumming, Ga).
Jared Coccia placed (Rock Hill, S.C.) 47th overall and Jonathan Loy (Thomasville, N.C.) finished in 49th place, giving the Spartans a quintet of runners in the top-50 of the event. The men's team finished ahead of both Western Carolina and Spartanburg Methodist in the competition.
Florida State easily won the men's competition, placing five runners in the top-10 of the event. Kasey Knevelbaard won the event with a time of 24:58.48. Fellow Big South school's High Point and UNC Asheville also raced in the event. The Panthers recorded a fourth place team finish and the Bulldogs finished right above the Spartans in sixth place. High Point junior runner El Hocine Bouchrak had the top individual time for a Big South athlete with a time of 25:18.33.
On the Women's side Mia Davis (Tega Cay, S.C.) led the Spartans with a 60th place finish in the event. The junior runner completed the 5.2 meter course in a time of 20:49.28. Freshman Laura Yarborough (Greer, S.C.) came in right behind Davis with a time of 20:50.69. Rounding out the Spartans top-three was sophomore runner Allie Leavitt (Fountain Inn, S.C.) with a total time of 21:40.91.
The Spartans finished ahead of Spartanburg Methodist and right behind Big South foe UNC Asheville. High Point finished in the top-three as a team and Famke Heinst won the individual title to lead the Panthers. Florida State won the team event with 11 runners finishing inside the top-15 individually.

The USC Upstate cross country teams will be back in action at home next weekend. The annual Eye Opener event will take place at 5:45 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C.
