Spartans Drop Season Finale to High Point

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate women's basketball finished the season series against High Point with a 70-48 loss Thursday afternoon at the G.B. Hodge Center. The Spartans closed the 2020 calendar year with a 3-6 (1-3 BSC) record.

High Point shot 7-for-11 beyond the arc in the first quarter to end the frame with a 24-8 lead over Upstate, a deficit the Spartans could ultimately never recover from. Upstate forced a handful of High Point turnovers in the second period and continued to outrebound the Panthers in the quarter for six second-chance points, but ended the first half down 41-20.

It was McKinley Brooks-Sumpter's pair of free throws that ended a scoring drought for the Spartans at the beginning of the third quarter, and Upstate continued to get stops on the defensive end. However, the Spartans struggled to put up points of their own. Upstate outscored the Panthers in the final frame, but it was not near enough to overcome the deficit.

"When the other team shoots better from the 3-point line than we shoot from the free-throw line, it's going to be a disaster. We did not follow the game plan. We did not play hard at times. We struggled to score the basketball," said head coach Becky Burke. "When we struggle to score the basketball like we do, we have to follow the game plan, and we didn't do that. The score reflects all of that."

Notes

  • Upstate once again won the battle on the boards, outrebounding High Point 42-27, 19-3 on the offensive boards.
  • McKinley Brooks-Sumpter hit double-figures once again with a team-high 10 points. She also had five rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
  • Jada Logan pulled down a season-high seven rebounds.
  • Molly Coleman was one board shy of a double-double with a 10-point, nine-rebound effort on the day.
  • Three Panthers scored in double-figures, led by Skyler Curran with 16 points.

Upstate takes a trip to Farmville, Va. next week to face Longwood in a back-to-back Big South Conference series Jan. 4-5. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. against the Lancers Monday and Tuesday.
