SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate softball team went 2-0 on Wednesday afternoon with a double-header sweep over North Carolina Central at Cyrill Stadium.
In the first game of the double-header the Spartans used clutch hits by
Alicia Dorgan,
Alyssa Oakes and
Savannah Grigsby to take a 3-0 advantage. Despite a late comeback attempt by the Eagles
Mallie Brown held on for her second win of the season.
In the second game of the afternoon freshman
Tiffany Domingue and
Max Barnes propelled the Spartans offense to victory. Domingue ended the game with a trio of RBI's, while Barnes added a pair in the fifth inning.
Celina Sullivan picked up her first win of the season as she struck out 11 Eagles in 6.2 innings of work.
Game 1: USC Upstate 3, N.C. Central 2
Scoring Breakdown
Bottom 2nd: Alyssa Oakes singled through the left side of the infield to begin the inning.
Peyton Darnell laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Oakes into scoring position and
Alicia Dorgan came through with an RBI single to left field.
Bottom 6th: Tiffany Domnigue hit a leadoff double down the left field line, putting the Spartans in a good position to add on an insurance run. Oakes ripped an RBI single into centerfield to put the Spartans up by a pair of runs. A few batters later and
Savannah Grigsby singled in a run to give USC Upstate a 3-0 lead.
Top 7th: Dalika Wallace walked to begin the inning and two batters later Joirea Dumas homered to right center field to pull the Eagles within a run of the Spartans.
Notables
Both
Tiffany Domingue and
Alyssa Oakes had 2-for-3 days at the plate. Oakes, Dorgan and Grigsby all collected RBI's in the opening game.
Game 2: USC Upstate 5, N.C. Central 1
Scoring Breakdown
Top 3rd: Tamiera Sanchez hit a leadoff homerun to left center field and broke a scoreless tie between the two squads.
Bottom 3rd: Celina Sullivan doubled to left center field to start the bottom of the third inning. One batter later and Sullivan came in to score on a Domingue sacrifice fly to right field.
Bottom 5th: Sullivan drew a leadoff walk and was pinch run for by
Ashlyn Wallace. Wallace stole second and advanced to third on a bunt double by
Sarah Price. Domingue scorched a two-run double down the left field line and the Spartans led by two. A few batters later and
Max Barnes laced a two-run single back up the middle of the infield to end the scoring for the Spartans.
Notables
Domingue went 2-for-3 at the plate with a trio of RBI's and Barnes added a pair of RBI's with a 1-for-3 day at the plate. Sullivan went 2-for-2 at the plate and in the circle she went 6.2 innings and struck out 11 batters in the process.
