SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Spartans completed a midweek sweep over Jackson State with a 9-4 win over the Tigers on Wednesday afternoon at Cleveland S. Harley Park. Freshman lefty Sawyer Worrell earned his first collegiate win after throwing six complete innings without allowing an earned run while striking out three JSU batters.
Kevin Davis tossed the last three innings to pick up his third save of the season. Davis allowed just two hits, one earned run, and zero walks while striking out four batters in his day of work.
Mason Stewart was 3-for-5 at the plate on the day with three RBI. Ben Olson batted 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Cameron MacIntosh also had a pair of hits in the game and drove in a pair of runs while crossing the plate twice himself.
UPSTATE SCORING BREAKDOWN
B1: The Spartans took advantage of a rough start to Jackson State's day on the mound to get on the board early. Upstate batted through the order in the bottom of the first and scored three runs on no hits as the Tigers walked three batters and hit three batters. Two runs scored on hit-by-pitches, and then Olson sent another run home on a sac fly to right.
B3: With two outs in the bottom of the third, Olson doubled down the left field line before Stewart drove Olson in with a single up the middle to give the Spartans a 4-0 lead.
B5: MacIntosh singled down the right field line and was pushed to second on Stewart's single through the 5-6 gap. Jack Hennessy then knocked in MacIntosh with an RBI single to right.
B7: Olson reached first base on a misplayed grounder by the Jackson State shortstop and made it home on the pitcher's errant throw to first on Conner Todaro's bunt.
B8: The Spartans rallied for three runs in the bottom of the eighth as Jack Gallagher singled to right and stole second before getting sent home on MacIntosh's single to right. Olson then singled to right center and took second on the throw that sent MacIntosh to third. Stewart cleared the bases with a two-run single up the middle that put the Spartans up 9-3.
