XC Opens 2021 Slate at Winthrop on Friday

Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's cross country teams are set to open the 2021 slate Friday, Jan. 29 at the Winthrop XC Invite, which takes place at the Winthrop Farm in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Spartans will be going up against a handful of Big South opponents including Winthrop, Gardner-Webb, Longwood, Radford, and UNC Asheville. The men's 8k is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start followed by the women's 5k at 3:20.
"We are excited to get back to racing. This will be the first time since February the athletes have lined up with DI runners," said head coach Carson Blackwelder. "Our goal is to tap back into that competitive mindset."
The men's team was recently picked to finish sixth in the Big South Preseason Poll and will be led this weekend by returners Jonathan Johnson, Jonathan Loy, Michael Tardella, Jared Keklak, and newcomer Carter Sexton.
Similarly, the women's team was picked to finish seventh in the preseason poll and will be led this weekend by returners Jamie Connelly, Stecy Cherono, Mia Davis, Alanie Foster, and freshman Heaven Allen.

Upstate will return to Winthrop for the Big South Conference Championships on March 5.
