Spartanburg, S.C. – The USC Upstate men's and women's cross country teams are set to compete in the Big South Championships this Friday, March 5. The meet is being hosted by Winthrop University at the Winthrop Farm in Rock Hill, S.C.
The Spartans will return to Rock Hill after competing at the Winthrop Adidas Invitational in their lone race of the regular season back on January 29. The women's 5K is set for a 2 p.m. start followed by the men's 8K at 3 p.m.
"Even though this has been an unusual season, I believe both teams are in great shape and ready to go after it on Friday," said head coach Carson Blackwelder.
On the men's side, Jonathan Johnson was Upstate's top finisher at the Winthrop Adidas Invite with a sixth place finish time of 26:07.6. Jonathan Loy was the second-best finisher for the Spartans as he set a PR time of 26:20.9 for 11th place at the same meet.
In addition to this duo, Upstate will look to Michael Tardella, Carter Sexton, and Jared Keklak to help lead the efforts for the men.
Jamie Connelly was the top finisher for the Upstate women at the Winthrop Adidas Invite with a PR time of 19:37.0. Mia Davis, who has consistently been a top runner for the Spartans throughout her career, was the second-best finisher at the Winthrop Adidas Invite with a time of 19:49.7.
Additionally, the trio of Allie Leavitt, Stecy Cherono, and Alanie Foster are expected to help lead the women's team Friday.
