BOONE, N.C. – On the road for the first time in the 2021 season, USC Upstate cross country headed to the Firetower Project Open, bringing home a fifth-place finish in the men's 8k race and an eighth-place finish in the women's 5K race against two stout fields.
In the men's race, senior Jonathan Johnson once again led the Spartans, collecting his second top-15 finish of the season with a 12th-place finish as freshman Logan Patete also claimed a top-25 placement, slotting 25th on the final leaderboard.

For the second consecutive event, senior Allie Leavitt paced the women as all six Spartans who ran at the season-opening Eye Opener improved their 5K times at the Firetower Project Open. Joining Leavitt among the top finishers for Upstate were freshman Allison Baker and sophomore Heaven Allen.
