Spartanburg, S.C. – Upstate softball started its week with an 11-1 and an 8-0 win over South Carolina State during their double-header Tuesday afternoon. Hannah Houge pitched near to perfection surrendering no hits and no runs during game two while 10 different Spartans contributed runs.
Despite S.C. State getting the first run of the game, Upstate quickly established a strong lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Two singles added two more runs in the second and third innings. Upstate would put the game out of reach with six runs scored in the bottom of the sixth, including Alanna Deal hitting her first home run of the season. Alyssa Kelly started game one for Upstate, pitching 4.0 innings surrendering four hits and one run but recorded five strikeouts, until she was relieved by Savannah Brown in the top of the fifth who went on to pitch 1.0 innings, surrendering no hits and no runs along with recording one strikeout.
In a similar fashion, Upstate took the early lead again in game two, scoring six runs in the bottom of the first inning alone. The Spartans went on to score two more runs in the bottom of the second inning, and then held the Bulldogs scoreless for the remainder of the game. Peyton Darnell recorded her ninth home run of the season while Emily Dixon earned her fourth run of the season. Hannah Houge pitched 5.0 innings, surrendering no hits and no runs, while recording two walks and nine strikeouts. Houge leaves the mound today with a 14-1 record.

How It Happened

T1: Lowther hit a single to left center giving Cohen enough time to advance to second and McDaniel enough time to reach home and put S.C. State on the board.

B1: With Sarah Price on second after a stolen base and Madison Lanoux on first after walking. Summer Johnson gave Upstate 3 runs with a home run to left.

B2: Price added to the runs as she sent Celeste Delorenzo home with a single to left center.

B3: Caroline Jacquay stepped up to the plate with the bases loaded; Jacquay's single through the left side advanced Liza Simmerson to second, Tiffany Domingue to third, and Johnson home making the score 5-1 in favor of the Spartans.

B4: While Peyton Darnell walked to first, Price was able to score off a Bulldog throwing error.

B4: Tiffany Domingue singled up the middle, as Johnson came home, and stretched Upstate's lead to six runs.

B4: Bella Bertot hit a sacrificed fly out to left field, providing pinch runner Darbie Lisk enough time to reach home plate.

B4: Alanna Deal hit her first home run of the season while Domingue and Caroline Jacquay were on bases making the score 11-1.

How It Happened

B1: Madison Lanoux hit a double down the left life with her first at-bat of game two and got Upstate the first run of the game with Sarah Price coming home.

B1: Tiffany Domingue hit a single to left field, advancing Summer Johnson to third and bringing Lanoux home for the second run of the game.

B1: With Domingue on first and Johnson on third, Peyton Darnell put three runs on the board as she hit her first home run of the day to right center.

B1: Despite Jacquay grounding out to second base, Alanna Deal was able to get home for the Spartans to close out the bottom of the first with a 6-0 lead.

B2: Domingue recorded her second hit of the game with a double to right field, advancing Emily Dixon to third and Lanoux home.

B2: Dixon scored her fourth run this season as she came home as Peyton Darnell grounded out to the S.C. State shortstop.
