Rinehart and MacIntosh Collect Multi-Hit Days, But Baseball Drops Rematch Against Clemson at Fluor Field

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Playing at Fluor Field for the first time since March 2020 and facing a rematch with Clemson, USC Upstate baseball couldn't find its footing the second time around against the Tigers, dropping the rematch 11-2 Tuesday night.
 
Scoring one run in the first and five in the second, Clemson jumped out to an early lead before Upstate put itself on the board with two runs in the third, setting up a 6-2 game following the first third of the game. The Tigers added two runs in the fourth and another in the sixth to grow its lead while adding two final runs in the ninth.
 
At the plate, freshman catcher Jace Rinehart and senior second baseman Cameron MacIntosh collected multi-hit efforts, their fourth and 11th of the season, respectively. Adding a run batted in for the Spartans, Rinehart drove home his seventh run of the season as he collected his third of four multi-hit games that included an RBI. Redshirt junior third baseman Troy Hamilton drove in Upstate's other run, collecting his seventh RBI and his second in as many games.

Scoring Summary
  • T1: Lifting a flare into rightfield, Blake Wright put Clemson on the board first as he plated leadoff man Benjamin Blackwell to give the Tigers an early 1-0 advantage.
  • T2: Taking advantage of a pair of walks early in the frame, the Tigers used four this in a five-batter span to push across five runs in the inning with the biggest hit of the inning a two-run single from Cooper Ingle.
  • B3: Ringing a two-out double off the batter's eye, Devin Buckner started a two-out rally for the Spartans as Noah Sullivan followed up with a hit by pitch to put two men on. After a passed ball moved both men into scoring position, Troy Hamilton beat out a slow roller to third as Buckner came into score. With a single through the left side, Jace Rinehart brought in Sullivan to make it a 6-2 game.
  • T4: Clemson got back its runs in the fourth as Wright drove home another run on a groundout to short before Ingle came home to score on a wild pitch.
  • T6: Employing a swinging bunt with a pair of runners in scoring position, Max Wagner brought home Blackwell from third to plate the sixth inning's lone run.
  • T9: The Tigers scored their final runs of the game as the first run of the inning came home off a passed ball with two men in scoring position before a Bryar Hawkins sac fly capped the scoring.
 
Notable
  • With a pair of singles in Tuesday's game, Jace Rinehart collected his fourth multi-hit effort of the season while adding an RBI, he secured his third multi-hit game with at least one RBI. Through the first nine starts of his career, he's collected a hit in eight of his nine starts.
  • Drawing a walk, hitting a double, and being hit by two pitches, Devin Buckner reached base in all four of his plate appearances Tuesday. His two HBP against Clemson give him a team-high 16 for the season with Tuesday's game marking the third time and second in the last three games, he's been hit by multiple pitches.
  • Being hit by a pitch against Clemson, Noah Sullivan increased his reached base streak to a team-high 17 games. He exits the midweek having been hit by 15 pitches this season.
