SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate women's basketball program continued its success at home in the 2023-24 season as the Spartans beat the Lady Bulldogs of S.C. State 58-53 on Monday night.
After another road trip on Friday, the Spartans were excited to be back home in the G.B. Hodge Center to take on the Lady Bulldogs. S.C. State came out quick to get on the board and establish a small lead over the Spartans. That lead was short lived as Upstate took the lead roughly two minutes into the first quarter and maintained it through the remainder of the game. After the first quarter, the Spartans led 17-6. Dakota Reeves led the Spartans on offense through the first quarter with six points while Jeni Levine contributed five points and Rebekah Gordon gave four. Trinity Johnson got off to a solid start with three assists, as did AC Markham who was credited with two.
Despite the Lady Bulldogs constant effort to chip away at the Spartans' lead with 17 points in the second quarter, the Spartans were able to hold on to their lead with an additional 11 points to make the game 28-23 at half time. Gordon led Upstate in the second quarter with four points while Reeves also posted another three. Johnson continued to be a key factor in Upstate's offense as she racked up another four assists. Upstate saw success at the free throw line in the first half as the Spartans held a 71.4% free throw percentage going into the halftime break.
Coming out of halftime, the Spartans once again found their rhythm as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 16-12 in the third quarter. J. Levine was able to find success as she scored five points to lead Upstate's offense. Maggie Brown came off the bench to help keep the Spartans offense dangerous and did just that with her success found in the paint. Markham proved to be essential in offense and defense, as she scored two points, had two assists, and three rebounds in the third quarter.
In the final quarter, Upstate finished strong scoring 11 points to solidify its win. As a team, Upstate went 8-12 for free throws with Johnson leading with six made free throw attempts. Markham scored another four points, bringing her total points to seven, while adding another three rebounds to finish the game with a season-high nine rebounds. Gordon finished the game tying her season-high for rebounds with eight.
