Upstate Softball Claims Day One of the Upstate Classic with 8-0 Win Over Bucknell and 10-5 Win Over Maine

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - USC Upstate softball team started off the 2023 season with two wins on the first day of the Upstate Classic. The Spartans started the day with an 8-0 win over the Bucknell Bison and followed the five-inning win with a 10-5 win over the University of Maine Black Bears.  

To start the day, Tiffany Domingue scored on a wild pitch and later earned the first home run of the 2023 season for Upstate. Returners, Celeste Delorenzo, Mady Lanoux, Denver Lauer, Caroline Jaquay, and Summer Johnson also were able to score their first runs of the season against Bucknell while freshman, Taliyah Thomas scored her first career run as she pinch ran for Peyton Darnell. Alyssa Kelly took the circle for the first game and earned her first win of the season as she had four strikeouts and walked away with a 0.00 ERA. The first game not only brought eight runs but also brought eight stolen bases courtesy of Domingue (1), Thomas (1), A. Johnson (1), S. Johnson (1), Jacquay (1), Goguts (1), Lauer (2).  

Domingue continued to lead the charge in game two against the Black Bears with a single to give Upstate its first run, followed by a run of her own on a wild pitch, and her second home run of the day in the bottom of the second inning. Sarah Price finished Upstate's scoring for the day with a home run over the left center wall. Price contributed to Upstate's offense in the second game with three runs, three RBI, two hits, and two stolen bases. Darnell (1), Jacquay (2), Lauer (1), Lanoux (1), and Deal (1) also robbed bases from the Black Bears. Maddie Drerup made her debut as a pitcher for the Spartans with her first start in game two. Drerup concluded her day throwing four strikeouts in five innings before she was relieved by Kelly.  

The Spartans will continue the Upstate Classic tomorrow, playing Bucknell at 1:00 p.m. and George Washington at 3:00 p.m.
