Offensive Outburst and Stellar Pitching Leads Baseball to Doubleheader Sweep and Series Victory Over Longwood

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – With Mother Nature making her presence felt on the Spartans' Easter weekend series by forcing a doubleheader to open a three-game set with Longwood, USC Upstate baseball swept the twin bill and captured its third Big South series victory of the season behind an 18-2 win in the front end and a 2-0 victory on the back end of the doubleheader Thursday at Cleveland S. Harley Park.

In game one, the Spartans bats set the tone, scoring 16 runs over the game's first four innings en route to an 18-2 victory with four players collecting multi-RBI games in the win. Leading the quartet of multi-RBI games, redshirt junior shortstop Troy Hamilton drove in a career-high six runs, going 2-for-4 at the plate. Redshirt junior first baseman Grant Sherrod clubbed his team-leading eighth homer of the year, a three-run shot to deep left-center in the second.

While Upstate's pitching was solid in game one of the twin bill, Spartan pitching stole the show in game two as three pitchers, freshman right-hander Mathieu Curtis, redshirt senior righty Chase Matheny, and redshirt sophomore righty Jake Cubbler, combining for a two-hit, four-baserunner shutout. Backing the stellar pitching, redshirt junior rightfielder Daniel Gernon hit his fourth homer of the year with a laser down the leftfield line.

Notable
  • With its wins Thursday afternoon, USC Upstate improved to 7-1 to start Big South play, starting league play at 7-1 for the second straight season. The start stands as the program's best start to conference play in the Division I era (2007-pres.)
  • With the doubleheader sweep of Longwood Thursday, the Spartans collected their first doubleheader sweep of the 2022 season and the first sweep of a twin bill since taking both ends of a doubleheader against Gardner-Webb on April 30, 2022.
  • Driving home six runs in game one of Thursday's twin bill, Troy Hamilton set a career-high for runs batted in with his eighth multi-RBI game of the season. His six RBI are the most in a game for a Spartan since April 20, 2022, when Noah Sullivan tallied six RBI against Gardner-Webb.
  • In the doubleheader, seven Spartan pitchers combined to allow two runs, seven hits, and 13 baserunners over 18.0 innings of work. The pitching staff also struck out 20 hitters over the twin bill.
