Event Preview:
USC Upstate cross country wrapped up their final away meet of the season with an impressive showing at the Live in Lou Classic, where nine Spartans set new personal records (PRs). In the men's 8k, Sam Shimanskiy led the way for the second time this season, securing a top-40 finish with a personal best sub-26 minute time. Ian Kelbert also broke the top 50, finishing in 25:49.8. Gabe Herron, Eric Perry, Connor Herrold, and Jason Heusinger continued their strong seasons, each setting new PRs.
On the women's side, Freshman Beth Ludwick led the team for the fourth consecutive race, setting a new personal best in the 5k with a time of 19:10.3. Grace Glassmeyer and Sofia Strom also posted impressive improvements, with Glassmeyer finishing in 19:53.4 and Strom shaving 10 seconds off her previous best. Gabby Sanchez capped off the day with a strong 21:29.4 finish, adding to the Spartans' growing list of PRs.
As they head into the Upstate Invite, the team looks to build on last year's results, where the men finished 14th out of 27 teams. In the 2023 Invite, Nigel Dos Santos, now a coach for Upstate, led the men with a 46th-place finish and a PR of 25:37.4. The women finished 24th out of 32 teams, clocking in at 19:19.4.
