How It Happened
First Half
- Responding to the Spartans winning the opening tap, Iowa jumped out of the gates with an 8-0 scoring run, forcing Upstate into a timeout. The Hawkeyes built the run to a game-long 14-0 run, forcing five Spartan turnovers before the under-16 media timeout.
- Out of the under-16 media, Upstate cut into the Iowa lead as it outscored the Hawkeyes 11-7 between the under-16 and under-12 stoppages. Five Spartans found the box score with the biggest shot in the stretch, a three from Brit Harris to snap the long Hawkeye run.
- Fashioning another lengthy scoring spurt, Iowa exited the under-12 stoppage with nine consecutive markers. Harris, again, snapped the Hawkeye scoring run, the first Spartan to notch multiple field goals in the game.
- Spanning the under-eight and extending past the under-four timeout, Iowa offered a 15-3 scoring stretch to increase its advantage as the half dwindled. Over the final three-and-a-half minutes of the first half, the two sides traded scoring with Upstate edging the Hawkeyes in the stint.
Second Half
- Opening the new stanza, Iowa crafted a similar start to the second half as it did the first, putting together a 10-0 scoring run. For the third time on the night, Harris ended the long Hawkeye scoring stretch, setting up a stretch seeing three of the Spartans' next four field goals coming from distance.
- Heading into the under-12 media stoppage, Upstate fashioned its longest scoring run of the day, clicking off a 9-0 stretch. Four Spartans scored in the run with Carmelo Adkins three the lone make from outside the arc. A pair of free throws from Karmani Gregory coming out of the timeout pushed the stretch to 11-2 in favor of Upstate.
- Answering the Spartans' scoring stretch, Iowa offered a 7-0 scoring run before Isaiah Skinner ended the run, notching the next two Spartan field goals. Into the under-eight media stoppage and coming out the other side, Upstate scored five straight with a pair of free throws from Harris following a Karmani Gregory three.
- Over the final four-and-a-half minutes of the game, Nic Book and Adkins offered a combined 12 points for the Spartans, scoring six markers apiece. Book's six points came behind two jumpers and two free throws while Adkins's six came from beyond the arc.
Notable
- Leading Upstate with 20 points, Brit Harris secured his second 20-point scoring effort in an Upstate uniform, tying his season-high scoring mark. His effort versus Iowa marks the sixth 20-plus point scoring performance by a Spartan this season.
- Knocking down a career-best four three-pointers versus Iowa, Carmelo Adkins tied the most single-game threes by a Spartan this season. His total ties the four made triples by Andrew McConnell versus Piedmont.
- Hitting 12 three-pointers Tuesday versus Iowa, Upstate improved its streak of consecutive games with at least one made three-pointer to 911 games, a streak dating back to the 1994-95 season. The stretch includes each of the Spartans' 542 games at the D1 level.
