Upstate Men’s Basketball uses balanced scoring attack downing Southern Virginia in their home opener

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - Rounding out the week after a two-game trip on the west coast, Upstate Men's Basketball opened home play in a non-conference matchup with Southern Virginia where every Spartan that touched the court ended up in the scoring column including four Spartans heading in double figures.  

Upstate Men's Basketball saw Carmelo Adkins surpass his new career high in points (23) and from beyond the arc (7), Kanye Jones tied his career high with 14, and CJ Rich added a new career high with five points. The Spartans dominated in the paint with 50 points compared to the Knights' 24. Upstate added a new season high with 68 bench points followed by using their pace to control the game with 32 fastbreak points.  

The Spartans never gave up the lead through 40 minutes while also scoring 56 through the first half and 49 in the second half. Breylin Garcia led the Spartans on the boards with nine rebounds followed by Nic Book, Tyler Smith, and Coen Collier added six rebounds. Tyler Smith led with four steals and five different Spartans added one block (Coen Collier, Tyler Smith, Kanye Jones, Jafeth Martinez, and CJ Rich).

How it Happened 

First Half 

  • The three-point barrage began with Carmelo Adkins converting on three consecutive triples boosting Upstate's lead to 18-9. 

  • The run continued with Jafeth Martinez adding a dunk followed by two free throws. Isaiah Skinner entered the fray splashing two consecutive three pointers. 

  • The Spartans continued to mix it up from beyond the arc and in the paint with Karmani Gregory adding a triple and Kanye Jones adding back-to-back layups; the Spartans ended their hot first half with a 56-25 lead. 

Second Half 

  • Upstate opens the second half with their fast-paced offense as the first six points were layups from Mason Bendinger and Learic Davis

  • The Spartans continued to dominate from beyond the arc with Karmani Gregory and Carmelo Adkins picking up where they left off from the first half with three consecutive three pointers. 

  • Kanye Jones began to find his rhythm with three consecutive layups and a floater in the paint moving their lead to 89-41. 

  • Chico Johnson scored the final basket for the Spartans marking his first score since returning from his previous injury. 

Notable 

  • Carmelo Adkins led with his new career high in points with 23 points followed by a new career high with seven three-pointers. 

  • Kanye Jones tied his career high with 14 points, which was also his highest scoring total in a Spartan jersey. 

  • Today's game marked the second consecutive game shooting 50 percent and above as Upstate added their season high of 61 percent from the field.
