BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. – Returning to Big South Conference play following a six-game detour against non-conference foes, USC Upstate baseball captured its fourth straight league victory, downing Gardner-Webb 15-3 Friday night at Bill Masters Field at John Henry Moss Stadium. Scoring in double-figures for the 15
th time this season, the Spartans scored 10-plus runs for the fourth straight conference game—seventh time overall in league play—in Friday's win.
Setting the tone for the team's offense, redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher
Amp Phillips turned in his fourth consecutive quality start, limiting the Runnin' Bulldogs to five hits over 6.0 scoreless innings. Taking over in the seventh inning, freshman left-hander
Max Kaplan secured his first career save, working the final 3.0 frames of the night while striking out five.
Stoking the team's 15-run outburst, Upstate slugged four home runs, the fourth time this year seeing the Spartans hit four-plus long balls, but the first inside Big South play. Fuelling a career-high five-RBI night, redshirt sophomore centerfielder
Scott Newman's 15
th homer of the year proved his second grand slam of the campaign.
Redshirt junior rightfielder
Scott Campbell (eighth), sophomore shortstop
Vance Sheahan (sixth), and junior first baseman
Wylie Waters (11
th) joined Newman with a long ball for the Spartans. Joining Newman with a multi-RBI night, senior designated hitter
Johnny Sweeney, Sheahan, and Waters drove home three, two, and two runs apiece.

How It Happened
- T3: Going back-to-back, Vance Sheahan and Scott Campbell slammed long balls into the trees in leftfield. Sheahan's two-run blast opened the scoring before a solo blast from Campbell extended the advantage.
- T4: The Spartans hung three more tallies on the board in the fourth. Wylie Waters left the yard to the opposite field to start the three-run frame before a ground-rule double from Henry Zenor capped the frame.
- T5: Adding another RBI to his daily total, Waters drove home another run with a double to deep center.
- T6: Fuelling a five-spot in the frame, the Spartans loaded the bases, seeing the first run cross as Johnny Sweeney drew an HBP. Scott Newman followed and broke the inning wide open with a grand slam, exiting the yard to the left of the batter's eye in center.
- T7: Tacking on his fifth RBI of the evening, Newman drove home Zenor with a sac fly to right.
- B8: Putting the Runnin' Bulldogs on the board, Gardner-Webb's Dale Francis Jr. hit a three-run homer to left.
- T9: Recording two more RBI, Sweeney tucked a double inside the first base bag, chasing Sheahan and Campbell home.
Notable
- Hitting his second grand slam of the year Friday, Scott Newman became the fifth different Spartan in the Division I era (2007-pres.) to hit two or more career grand slams, joining Charlie Carpenter (three), Devin Buckner (three), Grant Sherrod (two), and Koby Kropf (two). Newman joins Buckner, Sherrod, and Kropf as the lone Spartans in the era to hit multiple grand slams in a season.
- Slugging his 15th homer of the campaign, Newman's total ties for fifth in the Division I era (2007-pres.) and ties for ninth overall in program history for home runs in a season.
