GREENSBORO, N.C. – Following up on his American Baseball Coaches Association First Team All-Region honors earned earlier this week, USC Upstate baseball's
Johnny Sweeney adds All-American recognition to his standout season, being named an ABCA/Rawlings First Team All-American Friday morning.
A senior from Millstadt, Ill., Sweeney is the first First Team All-American in program history and just the second Spartan, joining Matt Goyea (Third Team) in 2005, to earn All-American accolades from the ABCA. Upstate's first Dick Howser Trophy semifinalist, Sweeney is the sixth all-time ABCA First Team All-American in Big South history, the first since 2022.
This season, Sweeney established the program's single-season RBI record, driving home 82 runs, a total ranking sixth in the NCAA entering the NCAA Division I Men's College World Series. He also set a pair of Division I era (2007-pres.) records, crafting the era's single-season marks for walks (42) and on-base percentage (.500). Overall, Sweeney closed the campaign slashing .345/.500/.701 with 15 doubles and 18 homers.
