Women's Soccer Remains Unbeaten in Conference Play, Defeating Winthrop

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate women's soccer remained perfect in Big South play Saturday afternoon, using a dominant offensive performance to secure a 5-1 victory over Winthrop at County University Soccer Stadium.
The Spartans struck early and often, receiving two goals apiece from Lily MacCausland and Liana Bryant, while Jasmyn Mitchner added another as Upstate built a commanding advantage. The victory pushed the Spartans to 8-2-3 overall and 4-0-0 in conference action.
Upstate wasted little time finding the back of the net, with MacCausland opening the scoring in the 14th minute. Bryant doubled the advantage just over six minutes later, finding the net at the 20:25 mark to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans added another before the halftime break. In the 41st minute, Cansu Kara set up Mitchner, who converted the opportunity to send Upstate into the locker room with a 3-0 advantage.
Upstate's attack picked up where it left off following halftime. MacCausland completed her brace in the 53rd minute, scoring her second goal of the afternoon to stretch the Spartan advantage to four.
Bryant followed with her second goal of the match in the 62nd minute, making it 5-0 and putting the finishing touches on a standout offensive afternoon for the Spartans.
Winthrop broke through in the 68th minute when Amalie Steen converted a penalty kick, but the Spartans' lead proved more than enough as Upstate closed out the 5-1 conference victory.
Upstate controlled the attacking numbers throughout the afternoon, finishing with a 23-8 advantage in shots and placing 12 attempts on goal compared to two for the Eagles. The Spartans also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Bryant led all players with eight shots, putting six on frame while scoring twice. MacCausland was perfect with her opportunities, scoring on both of her two shots, while Mitchner finished with four attempts and two shots on goal.
In net, Hannah Wilt started and played the opening 62:22, making one save without allowing a goal. Kayla Cervantes closed out the final 27:38 for the Spartans.
