USC Upstate men's basketball head coach Marty Richter announced the addition of Riley McGillan to the Spartans' coaching staff ahead of the 2026-27 season.
Richter enters his third season leading the program this fall after USC Upstate posted a seven-game win improvement and earned 10-plus home victories for the first time since the 2022-23 season.
McGillan joins the Spartans after serving as an assistant coach at Belmont Abbey College, where he helped the Crusaders quadruple their win total during his second season with the program.
Prior to Belmont Abbey, McGillan spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Lenoir-Rhyne. The Bears increased their win total each season during his tenure and set a school record for three-point field goal percentage defense in 2022-23 under his direction as defensive coordinator.
"Riley is a great basketball mind and a rising star in the coaching industry," Richter said. "Our student-athletes are going to love the energy he brings to the gym every day. He has a bright future, and I am happy to have him with us."
McGillan previously spent two seasons at Longwood as the men's basketball director of operations, helping the Lancers earn what was then their highest conference finish and most Big South victories in the program's Division I history.
A Clemson graduate, McGillan spent six seasons with the Tigers' men's basketball program as a manager, student-athlete and graduate assistant. He was part of Clemson's 25-win season and run to the NCAA Sweet 16 in 2017-18.
"We've built strong momentum over the past two seasons, and Riley will play an important role in helping our program take the next step in year three," Richter said.
