JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – USC Upstate men's soccer turned in a complete performance on the road Tuesday evening, striking early and adding a pair of late insurance goals to earn a 3-0 victory over ETSU at Summers-Taylor Stadium.

The victory moves the Spartans to 2-2-0 on the season as Upstate produced its first clean sheet of the campaign while handing ETSU its second loss of the year. The Spartans controlled the attacking numbers throughout the match, finishing with a 15-6 advantage in shots and placing nine attempts on frame.

Upstate wasted little time getting on the board as Josh Zawlocki opened the scoring in the seventh minute. After the Spartans generated a pair of early opportunities, Tolu Fabamifobee connected with Zawlocki, who found the back of the net at the 6:10 mark to give Upstate a 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Zawlocki's second of the season.

The Spartans continued to apply pressure following the opening goal, generating nine shots during the first 45 minutes while limiting the Buccaneers to just two attempts. Upstate carried its 1-0 advantage into the halftime break.

ETSU's comeback effort became more difficult shortly after halftime as Frank Manrod was shown a red card at the 46:20 mark, reducing the Buccaneers to 10 men. ETSU later went down another man when Hugo Martinez received a red card in the 71st minute.

Upstate capitalized on the advantage down the stretch.

Christian Cook doubled the Spartan lead in the 78th minute, finishing an opportunity created by Johannes Lund for his second goal of the season. The strike gave Upstate insurance with just over 12 minutes remaining.

Just over four minutes later, the Spartans struck again. Bennett Leitner found the back of the net at the 81:58 mark off an assist from Ola Haugsrud, pushing the advantage to 3-0 and putting the match out of reach. Like Zawlocki and Cook, Leitner's goal was his second of the season.

While the offense provided three different goal scorers, the Spartan defense was equally impressive. Upstate held ETSU without a single shot on goal despite the Buccaneers attempting six shots. Jarrett Wuerslin played all 90 minutes in goal to earn the shutout, while the Spartans' back line kept the Buccaneers from seriously threatening the Upstate net.

Upstate finished the night with a 15-6 advantage in total shots, a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal and a 5-3 edge in corner kicks. ETSU goalkeeper Noe Delmotte made six saves as the Spartans consistently tested the Buccaneer defense.

Zawlocki, Cook and Leitner each finished with a goal, while Fabamifobee, Lund and Haugsrud each recorded an assist. Cook led Upstate with three shots, putting two on target, while Oscar Kelly and Henry Burt also placed two shots apiece on goal.
