Spartans Hit the Road for Pair of Matches at North Carolina Central, Elon

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a thrilling five-set victory at Queens on Wednesday night, the USC Upstate volleyball team returns to action this weekend with a pair of road matches, beginning Friday at North Carolina Central before traveling to Elon for a Saturday night matchup.

The Spartans, who enter the weekend with a 4-2 overall record, will face North Carolina Central on Friday, Sept. 11, at 6 p.m. at McDougald-McLendon Arena in Durham, N.C. Upstate will then make the trip to Elon, N.C., to take on the Phoenix on Saturday, Sept. 12, at 6 p.m. at Schar Center.

LAST TIME OUT

Upstate enters the weekend riding the momentum of a 3-2 comeback victory at Queens on Wednesday. The Spartans have now won three of their last four matches and own a 3-0 record away from home this season.

The victory at Queens was the latest in a strong opening stretch for the Spartans, who also picked up road wins over Old Dominion and Norfolk State during the Old Dominion Tournament. Upstate's lone losses this season have come against St. John's and West Florida.

SCOUTING NORTH CAROLINA CENTRAL

North Carolina Central enters Friday's matchup with a busy stretch of volleyball underway. The Eagles opened the season with wins over Florida A&M and Arkansas-Pine Bluff before falling to Alabama A&M, Gardner-Webb and UNC Asheville. NCCU was also scheduled to travel to North Carolina A&T on Thursday before returning home to host the Spartans.

Friday's match will be the first meeting between Upstate and North Carolina Central this season. The Eagles have designated the contest for the MEAC Network, with first serve set for 6 p.m.

SCOUTING ELON

Upstate will close the weekend against Elon on Saturday evening. The Phoenix enters the weekend at 2-6 overall and will host Davidson on Friday before welcoming the Spartans to Schar Center on Saturday.

Elon has faced a challenging early-season schedule, including matches against St. John's, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, Robert Morris, Duquesne, Eastern Michigan and Appalachian State. The Phoenix's most recent contest was a four-set loss to Appalachian State on Tuesday.

Saturday's contest marks the ninth all-time meeting between the Spartans and Phoenix. Elon will provide the second half of a demanding weekend for Upstate, which will be playing its second match in as many days and its fourth road match in its last five contests.
