Spartans Fall in Four Sets at Elon

ELON, N.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team battled back from a two-set deficit to force momentum in the third set, but Elon answered in the fourth to secure a 3-1 victory over the Spartans Saturday afternoon at Schar Center.
Elon claimed the match by scores of 25-21, 25-14, 19-25 and 25-15. With the loss, Upstate moves to 5-3 on the season.
Summer Kohler paced the Spartans offensively with 17 kills, while Savannah Page added seven kills and Kensley Haneline finished with six. Kamyla Vega David directed the Upstate offense with 27 assists, while Sophia Overholt recorded 14 digs. The Spartans finished the match with 43 kills and hit .158 as a team.
SET ONE – Elon 25, USC Upstate 21
Upstate opened with a 1-0 lead before Elon answered with a 3-0 run. The Spartans later used a 3-0 stretch to tie the set at 9-9. Elon built a 20-14 advantage, but Upstate battled back to within 21-18 and 24-21 before Elon closed out the set, 25-21.
SET TWO – Elon 25, USC Upstate 14
Upstate took an early 3-2 lead before zElon broke the set open with a 7-0 run while racing out to a 9-3 advantage. Upstate trimmed the deficit to 14-9, but Elon responded with a 6-2 run to take a 20-11 lead. The Phoenix finished the set, 25-14.
SET THREE – USC Upstate 25, Elon 19
After falling behind 4-1, Upstate answered with a 3-0 run to tie the set at 4-4. Elon later led 13-10, but the Spartans scored six of the next seven points to take a 16-14 lead. After Elon pulled within 16-15, Upstate scored five in a row again to build a 21-16 advantage and held on for a 25-19 victory.
SET FOUR – Elon 25, USC Upstate 15
The teams traded points early before Elon erupted for a 7-0 run to take an 8-1 lead. Upstate fought back to within 9-7, but the Phoenix answered with a 6-0 run. The Spartans later cut the deficit to 21-14 before Elon outscored the Spartans 4-1 to win the set, 25-15, and the match, 3-1.
USC Upstate will return to the court on Thursday, September 17, traveling to Cullowhee, N.C. to take on Western Carolina in the final match of a four-game road swing for the Spartans.
