SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate men's soccer battled back with a pair of second-half goals Tuesday night, but its late rally fell just short as the Spartans dropped a 3-2 decision to crosstown rival Wofford at Snyder Field.
After entering halftime facing a two-goal deficit, Upstate found its offensive rhythm during the second 45 minutes. Henry Burt and Matiwos Rumley each found the back of the net for the Spartans, with Rumley's strike in the closing minutes pulling Upstate within one and giving the Spartans an opportunity to complete the comeback.
Wofford opened the scoring in the 13th minute as Scott Cheevers broke the scoreless tie off an assist from Clemens Astrup. The Terriers doubled their advantage in the 36th minute when Max Talley converted with assists credited to Fabian Menendez and Sam Case, sending Upstate into the halftime break trailing 2-0.
The Spartans continued to battle after the break, but Wofford extended its advantage in the 68th minute. Cheevers struck for his second goal of the night, receiving a feed from Bradley Takamo to push the Terrier lead to 3-0.
Just 27 seconds after Wofford's third goal, Burt put the Spartans on the board in the 68th minute. The goal marked Burt's first of the season and cut the deficit to 3-1 as Upstate began to build momentum heading into the final stages of the match.
The Spartans continued applying pressure late, and Ron Pressler forced a save from Wofford goalkeeper Pepe Hinterschuster in the 86th minute. Upstate earned a corner moments later before Rumley converted in the 87th minute, trimming Wofford's advantage to one at 3-2. The goal marked Rumley's second of the season.
Upstate continued searching for the equalizer in the closing minutes, with Ola Haugsrud getting an attempt away in the 89th minute, but the Spartans were unable to complete the comeback before the final whistle.
The Spartans finished the night with 10 shots, placing five on frame, while Wofford recorded 15 attempts with six on goal. Upstate also earned six corner kicks compared to seven for the Terriers. Jarrett Wuerslin played all 90 minutes in goal for the Spartans, making three saves.
