Saturday marks the beginning of conference action for both programs as Upstate looks to start its Big South slate on a positive note. The Spartans enter the weekend at 2-6 overall following a challenging non-conference schedule that included road contests against South Carolina, UAB, Wake Forest and Wofford.
Upstate is coming off a hard-fought 3-2 setback against Wofford Tuesday night. The Spartans found themselves trailing before mounting a second-half comeback behind goals from Henry Burt and Matiwos Rumley, but the rally ultimately fell just short.
Through eight matches, the Spartan offense has produced 13 goals while averaging 12.2 shots per contest. Christian Cook and Josh Zawlocki have led the attack with three goals and six points apiece, while Rumley has added two goals. Upstate has also generated 41 corner kicks compared to 34 for its opponents.
Cook and Zawlocki enter conference play with some additional recognition after both were named Big South Midseason Players to Watch alongside defender Jalen Moore. Cook and Zawlocki have combined for six of Upstate's 13 goals, while Moore is tied for the team lead with two assists and has helped the Spartans record a pair of clean sheets.
SCOUTING PRESBYTERIAN
Presbyterian enters Saturday's matchup at 0-6 overall after falling 4-1 at Stetson in its most recent outing. The Blue Hose have scored three goals through their opening six matches while allowing 19, averaging 7.7 shots per game.
Mo Alahmad and Gabe Carvalho have each recorded a goal and an assist to lead Presbyterian with three points apiece, while Bryce Burdette accounted for the Blue Hose goal in Tuesday's matchup at Stetson. In goal, Saed Anabtawi has made 22 saves through five starts.
Saturday begins an important stretch for the Spartans as they transition into Big South play. Following the matchup at Presbyterian, Upstate continues conference action on the road against Longwood on Sept. 26 before stepping back outside league play for a trip to Elon on Sept. 29.
Kickoff between the Spartans and Blue Hose is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Saturday from Martin Stadium in Clinton.
