Upstate returns home following a four-match road swing, closing the stretch with a 3-1 victory over Queens Sunday afternoon. After conceding in the sixth minute, the Spartans responded with three unanswered goals over an 11-minute span as Katelyn Economopoulos, Lily MacCausland and Annabelle Wunderlich each found the back of the net. Upstate outshot the Royals 13-5 while placing nine attempts on goal.
The victory moved the Spartans to 4-2-2 through their first eight matches of the season and continued a strong offensive start for Upstate. The Spartans have scored 17 goals this season, averaging 2.12 goals per match, while putting 43 of their 77 shot attempts on frame. Upstate has scored multiple goals in six of its eight matches, including each of its last two contests.
Liana Bryant continues to pace the Spartan attack with six goals while contributing four assists, giving her a hand in 10 of Upstate's 17 goals this season. Jasmyn Mitchner has added four goals and two assists during an impressive start to her freshman campaign, while Economopoulos and Wunderlich have each scored twice. Mitchner enters Wednesday's match after being named the Big South Freshman of the Week.
Upstate has also been difficult to beat at County University Soccer Stadium this season, carrying a 2-0-0 home record into Wednesday. The Spartans earned a 3-2 victory over Davidson in their home opener before posting a 4-0 shutout against Hampton on Aug. 30.
USC Aiken makes the trip to Spartanburg with a 2-4-0 record under head coach Adam Kleman. The Pacers opened the year with losses to Francis Marion and Wingate surrounding a 2-0 victory over Mount Olive before earning a 3-0 win against North Greenville. USC Aiken enters Wednesday having dropped consecutive matches to Anderson and Florida Southern.
The Pacers have scored seven goals through six matches this season. Senior Greta Ohlwein leads the way with two goals and two assists, while Olivia Pia, Emma Gause, Layne Frericks, Isabella Recalde and Reese Agnew have also found the back of the net. In goal, Savannah Yerger has accumulated 35 saves and helped USC Aiken record a pair of shutouts.
Wednesday's match serves as Upstate's final contest before turning its attention to Big South Conference play. Following USC Aiken, the Spartans remain at County University Soccer Stadium to host Radford Saturday, Sept. 19 at 7 p.m. in their conference opener.
