FARMVILLE, Va. – USC Upstate women's soccer continued its strong start to Big South Conference play Saturday afternoon, using a pair of first-half goals and another stout defensive performance to earn a 2-0 road victory over Longwood at the Longwood Athletics Complex.

With the win, Upstate improves to 6-2-3 overall and 2-0-0 in Big South play, while Longwood falls to 3-6-2 overall and 0-2-0 in conference action.

The Spartans wasted little time applying pressure, breaking through in the 10th minute. Following back-to-back corner kicks, Jasmyn Mitchner found the back of the net at the 9:32 mark for her fifth goal of the season. Cansu Kara and Liana Bryant each picked up an assist on the opening goal.

Upstate doubled its advantage just over 15 minutes later. Kara added a goal of her own in the 25th minute, scoring unassisted to give the Spartans a 2-0 lead that they carried into halftime. The goal marked Kara's first of the season and gave her three points on the afternoon.

The Spartans controlled much of the action throughout the match, outshooting the Lancers 14-4 while putting nine attempts on goal. Upstate also held a commanding 10-0 advantage in corner kicks, including five in each half.

Bryant remained one of Upstate's most dangerous attacking threats, finishing with a match-high five shots, all five on goal, while adding the assist on Mitchner's game-opening score. Mitchner placed all three of her attempts on frame and scored the eventual game-winning goal.

Upstate continued to threaten after halftime despite being unable to add to its advantage. Mitchner forced a save early in the second half, while Kara struck the woodwork in the 61st minute. The Spartans also earned a penalty kick late in the contest, but Annabelle Wunderlich's attempt missed the mark.

On the other end of the field, the Spartan defense limited Longwood to only four total shots and just one shot on goal. Goalkeeper Hannah Wilt made the lone save she was called upon to make, turning away Ella Searcey's effort in the 79th minute to preserve the clean sheet. Wilt played all 90 minutes in goal to earn the shutout and victory.
