Spartans Set to Co-Host Upstate/Gardner-Webb Volleyball Tournament

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team returns home for a pair of matches this weekend, looking to build on a strong opening weekend as the Spartans welcome Alabama State and West Florida to the G.B. Hodge Center for the Upstate/Gardner-Webb Tournament.
First serve between the Spartans and Alabama State is set for 4 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 4, with the match available to watch on ESPN+ and live statistics available through Upstate Athletics. Upstate will then make the quick turnaround on Saturday afternoon, playing host to the Argonauts of West Florida at 2 p.m.
Upstate enters Friday's contest with a 2-1 overall record after opening the season at the Old Dominion Tournament in Norfolk, Va. The Spartans began the season with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Old Dominion before returning to the court later that day to defeat Norfolk State, 3-1. Upstate closed the weekend against St. John's, falling 3-1 to finish the tournament with two victories in three matches.
Upstate battled through a five-set contest against Old Dominion and followed it with a four-set victory over Norfolk State, showing its ability to compete deep into matches.
With the season still in its early stages, this weekend's matches give Upstate another opportunity to continue developing its chemistry and establish momentum, this time in front of its home crowd.
The weekend will feature plenty of volleyball for all four participating teams. Alabama State will square off against UNC Wilmington Thursday evening before taking on West Florida Friday at noon and Upstate at 4 p.m. The Spartan will then take on UWF Saturday at 2 p.m. Saturday's slate includes UNCW versus West Florida at 10 a.m. followed by Upstate closing the tournament out with West Florida at 2 p.m.
