
Spartans Break Out the Brooms With 3-0 Decision Over Alabama State

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team turned in another strong performance at the G.B. Hodge Center on Friday afternoon, sweeping Alabama State, 3-0, by set scores of 25-22, 25-14 and 25-18.
With the victory, the Spartans improve to 3-1 on the young season, while Alabama State falls to 0-6.
Upstate established control early in the opening set, edging the Hornets 25-22. Alabama State kept the set competitive throughout, but the Spartans maintained their composure down the stretch to take a 1-0 lead.
The Spartans then took command in the second set, racing to a 25-14 victory. Upstate's offense found its rhythm, recording 18 kills while hitting .500 as a team in the frame. The Spartans carried that momentum into the third set, hitting .448 with 16 kills to close out the sweep, 25-18.
Senior Summer Kohler led the offensive attack with a match-high 18 kills while hitting .429. She also added two digs and a block to finish with 18.5 points.
Kensley Haneline continued her strong start to the season with 11 kills on 21 attacks without committing an error, producing a .524 hitting percentage. She also recorded a block and finished with 12 points.
Bri Brathol added eight kills while hitting .250 and contributed two service aces and two block assists for 11 points. Sophia Spivey chipped in seven kills on just 11 attacks without an error, hitting a team-best .636.
Running the offense, Kamyla Vega David dished out 41 assists while adding six digs. Sophia Overholt anchored the defensive effort with a match-high 20 digs and added two service aces.
As a team, Upstate finished the match with 53 kills on 104 attacks, hitting .442. The Spartans also recorded 48 digs, four service aces and six total blocks.
The Spartans were particularly efficient throughout the match, committing just seven attack errors. After hitting .390 in the opening set, Upstate improved to .500 in the second before closing the match with a .448 attack percentage in the third.
USC Upstate will make the quick turnaround, returning to the court on Saturday afternoon while facing off against the Argonauts of West Florida. First serve is set for 2 p.m.
