Spartans Fall 3-1 Against West Florida

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The USC Upstate volleyball team battled West Florida on Saturday afternoon at the G.B. Hodge Center, but the Spartans ultimately fell to the Argonauts, 3-1, by scores of 25-15, 19-25, 25-19 and 25-16.
The Spartans, who entered the match with a 3-1 record, battled back after dropping the opening set to even the match at one set apiece. West Florida, however, responded by taking the final two sets to remain unbeaten on the season.
USC Upstate was led offensively by Summer Kohler, who recorded a team-high 16 kills on 56 attacks. Kensley Haneline added 11 kills while hitting .500 for the match, while Tien Murray contributed seven kills. Kamyla Vega David directed the Spartans' offense with 39 assists and added a service ace.
Defensively, Hannah Campbell paced Upstate with 12 digs, while Sophia Overholt recorded 13 digs. Vega David added 10 digs, and Kohler finished with nine digs.
West Florida controlled the opening set, hitting .268 while building a 25-15 victory. The Spartans answered in the second, taking advantage of a much-improved offensive performance to claim the set, 25-19, and even the match at 1-1.
The Argonauts regained momentum in the third set, hitting .317 on the way to a 25-19 win. West Florida then closed the match with a strong fourth set, hitting .419 and limiting Upstate to a .059 attack percentage in the final frame.
Despite the setback, USC Upstate finished the match with 48 kills, 46 assists and 56 digs.
USC Upstate will look to bounce back on Wednesday, September 9, traveling to the Queen City to face Queens University of Charlotte. First serve is slated for 6 p.m. and will broadcast on ESPN+.
