Gilbert Kemboi is in his first year as the volunteer assistantcoach with the cross country programs at USC Upstate.
Kemboi is the standard for all Upstate men's cross country andtrack & field distance runners after turning in an epic careerthat is arguably the top individual atheltic career in the historyof the athletic department. By the time he finished his four-yearcareer at Upstate in 2013, he claimed 14 individual A-Sunchampionships in cross country and track & field, making himone of the top distance runners in A-Sun history.
Kemboi claimed three straight A-Sun cross country championshipsfrom 2010-12 and helped lead the Spartans to back-to-back teamchampionships in 2011 and 2012. He became the first Upstatestudent-athlete to advance to an NCAA Nationals competition,finishing two places away from All-America status in 2012.
In addition to his three A-Sun cross country titles, Kemboi wasa multiple champion in the 3,000 and 5,000 meter races at the A-SunIndoor Track & Field Championships, while also taking homemultiple titles in the 5,000 and 10,000 meters at the A-Sun OutdoorTrack & Field Champsionships.
Kemboi was also an exceptional student and earned multiple A-SunScholar-Athlete of the Year honors in cross country and track &field. He became the first Upstate student-athlete to earn twoprestigious honors as well, garnering the NCAA PostgraduateScholarship as well as A-Sun Student-Athlete of the Year honors in2013. In addition, he earned two Upstate Athletics Coca-ColaStudent-Athlete of the Year honors in 2012 and 2013 for exclellencein academics, athletics and community service.
Kemboi is a native of Eldoret, Kenya, and attended KangetunyHigh School prior to coming to Upstate.
