
Upstate Finishes 4th at Frank Landrey Invitational

AMHERST, Va. - Behind a pair of sixth-place individual finishes, the USC Upstate men's golf team finished fourth at the Frank Landrey Invitational played at the 7,059-yard, par-72 Poplar Grove Golf Club Tuesday afternoon.
Baxter Culler, who entered the final round of the 54-hole tournament tied for first, and Gaffney's Josh Gallman each finished in a tie for sixth to pace the Spartans. Culler shot a final round 78 to finish at 1-over-par 217. Gallman shot a 1-under 71 Tuesday to also finish with the 217 total. Upstate placed three players in the Top 15 after Michael Lawrence finished with a 222 total (+6) to finish tied for 15th. Tyler Tucker finished with a 2-over 74 Tuesday to finish tied for 39th with a 231 total. Jamie Lightsey was tied for 52nd with a 237 effort, while Jeffery Horton, playing as an individual in the event, finished 59th with a 242 total.
Upstate shot a team score of 300 Tuesday to finish with an 885 total. Radford won the tournament with an 860 total and was followed by Richmond (870), Virginia Commonwealth (874), Upstate, Presbyterian (897), Longwood (901), James Madison (913), Gardner-Webb (915), Liberty (919), Youngstown State (923) and High Point (935) in the 11-team tournament.
Upstate put itself in contention for a fourth straight Top 5 finish this season with a school record 279 (-9) team score in the second round Monday. The Spartans began the season by winning the Rutgers Invitational, placing in a tie for fifth at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate and taking third at the MacDonald Cup.
Virginia Commonwealth's Vincent Nadeau won the individual championship with a 69-71-66=206 (-10) total. VCU placed four players in the Top 17 to vault over Upstate into third place.
Upstate takes two weeks off before heading to Seascape, N.C., to play in the ODU Seascape Invitational hosted by Old Dominion Oct. 29-30.
