SPARTANBURG, S.C. – USC Upstate men's golf senior Alec Prentice posted a top-five finish Sunday as the Spartans hosted the Carolina Cup at Carolina Country Club.
Playing a one-day, 36-hole format, Prentice shot near par on back-to-back rounds, while having nine birdies and one eagle. The Wellington, New Zealand native shot a 70 on the first 18, and a 71 during the second. Prentice finishes the event at three-under par, 141.Â
Phuthanate Kangwol found success for the Spartans on the shorter holes of the course. Kangwol was tied for fifth in the tournament in par-3 scoring. Creighton Rentz (24, T2) and Lucas Cai (23, T6) both finished in the tournament's top 10 in pars, with Cai also adding an eagle to his day.Â
Head Coach Todd Lawton discusses the team and tournament's success stating, "What a great weekend for golf!   It was truly an honor to host the Carolina Cup this weekend. We had some fantastic teams in our College Am on Saturday and today's 36-hole college player event was once again successful. I want to thank our staff at USC Upstate and especially the staff and owner of Carolina Country Club for the support. If you haven't been or played in this one, you've missed out! Shout out to Alec Prentice for playing so well and representing the home team strongly. We are already excited about the next Carolina Cup!"
The Carolina Cup, hosted at the Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, served as Upstate's first home competition of the fall.Â

USC Upstate's next tournament takes place October 23-25, at the Ocean Creek Course at the Fripp Island Resort at Fripp Island, S.C. as the Spartans host the Fripp Island Intercollegiate.
