
Upstate Men's Golf Third At MacDonald Cup

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The USC Upstate men's golf team turned in a solid first round at the MacDonald Cup at the Yale Golf Course, shooting a 295 Saturday afternoon to stand third headed into Sunday's final round.
Upstate, which has started the 2007-08 season with a bang by winning the Rutgers Invitational and finishing fifth at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate, trails leader Texas Christian by 10 strokes heading into Sunday's final round. Host Yale is second with a 286 score and is followed by Upstate (295), Drake (296) and Harvard (300) in the Top 5 of the 26-team event.
Upstate was paced by Michael Lawrence who finished with a 1-over-par 72 on the 6,749-yard, par-71 course. Lawrence, who won the individual championship at the Rutgers Invitational to open the season, is tied for 10th individually. Josh Gallman, the reigning Atlantic Sun Conference Golfer of the Month, turned in a 73 and is tied for 14th. Gallman won the individual championship at the Sea Trail Intercollegiate two weeks ago. Tyler Tucker opened the MacDonald Cup with a 74 and is tied for 19th. Baxter Culler is tied for 42nd with a 76 and Jamie Lightsey is one stroke back of Culler with a 77 and is tied for 51st.
Yale's Taylor Hakes leads the individual standings after firing a 2-under-par 69. TCU's Travis Woolf, Drake's Ben Freeman and Princeton's Andrew Maliniak are each tied for second after finishing with a 1-under 70.
