
Hot-Shooting Aggies Down Spartans, 92-54

GREENSBORO, N.C. - A hot-shooting North Carolina A&T hit 51.5 of its shots for the game, as it posted a 92-54 win over the USC Upstate women's basketball team in non-conference action at the Corbett Sports Center on Tuesday night.
Sophomore Courtney Hawkins (Greer, S.C./Greer) led the Spartans (2-4 overall) with 18 points and five assists. Freshman Kasey Thompson (Converse, Ind./Oak Hill) added 11 points and two 3-pointers. Both junior Courtney Bradley (Columbia, S.C./Dutch Fork) and freshman Tiffany Whiting (Troutman, N.C./South Iredell) added four assists. Freshman Oceana Jackson (Carnesville, Ga./Franklin County) saw her string of consecutive 10-point games snap at five, as she posted nine points, five rebounds and four steals.
"We ran into a very good team on Tuesday," Upstate head coach Tammy George said. "They were more aggressive and it showed all night."
The Aggies (5-1 overall) were led by five players in double-digits, with Amber Bland posting 17 points, Lonise Coulter and Jaleesa Sams each added 13, Brittan Taylor-James posted 12 and Lamona Smalley added 10.
The Aggies shot 54.3 percent from the field in the first half, Amber Bland pacing the team with nine points and Nancy Rembert adding seven, helping the team take a 46-24 lead into the lockerroom.
The Spartans and Aggies battled through the first four minutes, with the Aggies holding a 10-7 lead before the Aggies used an up-tempo offense to stake out a 17-0 run over the next eight minutes to take a 27-7 lead before a layup from Jackson fell through with 8:14 left.
The Spartan offense was led in the first half by Hawkins, who connected on three 3-pointers and posted 13 points in the half, and Jackson, who posted six points.
The North Carolina A&T offense slowed slightly in the early part of the second half, but gained momentum, with a 3-pointer from Nancy Rembert with two seconds left providing the final margin.
Upstate will stay on the road, traveling to Georgia Southern for a 12 p.m. Saturday game.

Upstate is now 6-3 all-time when playing on Nov. 27.
Freshman Tiffany Whiting posted a career-high four assists..
Sophomore Courtney Hawkins connected on her 25th career three with her fourth of the night. She posted a career-high with four 3-pointers, breaking the mark of three she set twice.
Freshman Kasey Thompson scored her first points in a Spartan uniform, hitting a 3-pointer from the left side with 2:59 left in the first half. She finished with 11 points in the game.
Junior Kelly Westfield scored her first points as a Spartan with a jumper from the right baseline with 8:22 remaining in the game. She finished with four points in the game.
Freshman Oceana Jackson posted a career-high four steals.
