DeLAND, Fla. - Josh Gallman started another tournament with a strong effort and again finds himself in familiar position atop the leaderboard at the Stetson/CFSC Invitational at the 6,989-yard, par-72 Victoria Hills Country Club Monday afternoon.
Gallman opened the tournament with a 75, but shot a 3-under-par 69 in the second round to finish the day at even-par 144. His is in first place all by himself, heading into Tuesday's final round with a one-stroke lead over Daniel Mazzietta from Florida Gulf Coast.
"The kid is just incredible," said Upstate head coach Todd Lawton. "It seems like when the chips are down for everybody else, he doesn't see it. He just keeps playing. He's done it from the beginning of the fall and has carried it through to now."
While Gallman turned in a strong effort, his teammates struggled in the second round. After opening with a 298 in the first round to tie for the lead with Florida Gulf Coast and host Stetson, the Spartans shot a 311 total in the second round and is currently fourth in the standings with a 36-hole 609 total. Gallman was the only Upstate player to break 80 in the second round.
"We are not playing the way we are capable of playing," said Lawton. "There is no excuse. It's just not there. Our focus could be much stronger. We played well in the first round, but didn't do the same in the second. We just didn't get it done. Josh's 69 in the second round kept it from being a really bad round for the team."
Upstate fell to fourth place with the 609 total and is just six shots out of second place. Florida Gulf Coast leads the tournament with a 298-291=589 total. Stetson is second at 603 and is followed by Bethune-Cookman (608), Upstate (609), Rollins (613), Florida Atlantic (622), Creighton (623), Florida A&M (624) and South Carolina State (651) in the nine-team tournament.
Individually, Baxter Culler and Jamie Lightsey are tied for 22nd with 155 totals for Upstate. Jeffery Horton is tied for 26th with a156 total, while Michael Lawrence is tied for 34th with a 159 effort.
